The social relations of montage

My work with the Freee art collective used photography to document and publish socially engaged and participatory projects. My montage works embed social relations of publishing, dependence on others, collaboration and dialogue within the material practice of working with books of photographs.

Photos are social relations

All photos are social and embody social relations. Ariella Azoulay contractual theory of photography rethinks photography through a relation between the photograph, the photographer and the photographed. This has to be extended in the case of photographs published in books globally over numerous decades.

Relations between photos

When a montage combines photographs into a new pattern, it mingles different social relations together. As an assembly of photographic images, therefore, the montage is necessarily a network of encounters, exchanges, alignments, displacements, histories and structures.
